Your UAN password is your gateway to your EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund) account. Whether you’re checking your balance, raising a withdrawal claim, or tracking your EPS service history—you need that password.
Yet, thousands of users every month find themselves locked out. Why?
- They forgot the password
- Their mobile number has changed
- They don’t know how to reset it
So here’s a full breakdown from the PF experts at FinRight on what your UAN password is, why it matters, and how to reset or change it easily.
Why Is It Important to Know Your UAN Password?
Your UAN login gives you access to:
Feature | Why It Matters |
Passbook download | See your full PF contribution history |
Online claims | Withdraw PF, pension, or take advance |
PF transfer | Apply for transfer between employers |
Service history | Track EPS eligibility and PF continuity |
KYC updates | Upload Aadhaar, PAN, Bank proof |
Grievance status | Track claim or error resolution |
No password = No access to any of this.
What Is the UAN Password?
The UAN password is a secure login credential you set while activating your account on the EPFO Member Portal.
You’ll need your:
- UAN (Universal Account Number)
- Aadhaar-linked mobile number
Once activated, your password becomes the only way to log in and view your PF details online.
What Is the Password Format?
EPFO has strict rules for password strength:
8 to 25 characters
Must include:
- 1 Uppercase letter (A-Z)
- 1 Lowercase letter (a-z)
- 1 Number (0-9)
- 1 Special character (@, #, $, %, etc.)
Example of a valid password:
Abcd@1234
Avoid easy combinations like Password@123—these may get rejected or flagged as unsafe.
3 Ways to Change or Reset Your UAN Password
Forgot Password Method (Most Common)
If you don’t remember your password:
Step-by-Step Guide
- Go to the EPFO Member Portal
👉 https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/ - Click on “Forgot Password” (just below the login form)
- Enter you detail
- UAN– (12 digit No.)
- Name (as per Aadhaar)
- Date of Birth

Make sure it meets EPFO’s strong password criteria:- 8–25 characters

📌 Takes effect immediately on Member Portal. Passbook may take up to 6 hours to reflect.
Change Password After Login (Recommended Every 2 Months)
It’s good practice to change your password regularly for security.
- Log in with your existing password
- Go to: Account > Change Password
- Enter old and new passwords
This keeps your account safe from phishing or fraud.
Reset Prompt Every 60 Days
EPFO sometimes prompts users to update their password after 60 days. You can use this window to reset and secure your credentials.
What Are the Requirements to Reset Your Password?
Requirement | Needed For |
UAN | Identify your EPF account |
Aadhaar-linked Mobile | OTP verification |
Activated UAN | You must have activated your UAN first |
Strong New Password | Must meet EPFO format rules |
💡 If mobile number is outdated, reset won’t work. You’ll need to update it via your employer.
How Long Does It Take to Reflect?

Member Portal | Immediate |
Passbook Portal | ~6 hours delay (typical) |
So don’t panic if you reset the password successfully but still get a login error on the passbook page—just wait a few hours.

Facing Issues While Resetting? Here’s What You Can Do
Many users get stuck during the password reset process due to minor mismatches or outdated records. Here are the most common errors—and how to resolve them:
“UAN does not exist”
This usually happens when your UAN hasn’t been activated or you’ve entered it incorrectly.
✅ Solution: Use the Know Your UAN tool with your Aadhaar or PAN to retrieve your correct UAN.
“Mobile number not linked”
EPFO sends OTPs only to the Aadhaar-linked number associated with your UAN.
✅ Solution: Ask your employer to update your mobile number through the Employer Portal. This cannot be done by employees directly.
“Details not matching”
Your name, DOB, or Aadhaar number may not match EPFO records.
✅ Solution: Cross-check your EPFO profile with your Aadhaar details. If there’s a mismatch, raise a Joint Declaration request via your employer to update the records.
“OTP not received”
This may happen due to network issues or if the number linked to Aadhaar is inactive.
✅ Solution: Ensure your mobile number is:
- Linked to your Aadhaar
- Active and has network coverage
- Able to receive SMS
Try again during non-peak hours if delays persist.
Your UAN password is more than just a login—it’s the key to unlocking your entire PF journey. Whether you’re checking your balance, applying for a PF withdrawal or Pf transfer, or just making sure your employer has been contributing properly, access to the EPFO portal is essential.
