What You Should Know About Your EPF Member ID

Member ID is a unique identifier assigned to you for each of your employer, registered under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Think of it like an account number that is linked to a specific employment.

If you’ve changed jobs multiple times, you’ll likely have multiple Member IDs—one for each job. However, all these Member IDs can (and should) be linked under your Universal Account Number (UAN).

Where to Find Your EPF Member ID

You can easily find your Member ID using any of the following methods:

✅ 1. EPFO Passbook Portal

✅ 2. UAN Member Portal

✅ 3. Salary Slip or HR Department

Sometimes, your Member ID is also mentioned in your monthly salary slip. If not, you can always check with your HR or payroll department—especially if you’re trying to locate an old PF account.

Why It Matters

Each Member ID helps EPFO track your contributions and interest for a specific job. If you’ve changed jobs and haven’t merged your old Member IDs under your UAN, you may miss tracking some balances unless you consolidate them.

Member ID Format Explained

Your Member ID is a mix of letters and numbers, and each part tells a story about your employment and location.

Let’s understand this using an example Member ID: “MHBAN00127800000001313”.

Here’s the breakup:

  • First two letters (“MH”): Represent the state code (e.g., MH = Maharashtra, UP = Uttar Pradesh, KA = Karnataka).
  • Next three letters (“BAN”): Indicate the regional EPFO office code (here, Bandra-Mumbai).
  • Next seven digits (“0012780”): These numbers are your employer’s establishment ID registered with EPFO.
  • Following three digits (“000”): This is the extension code, used when an employer has multiple branches. If not applicable, it defaults to “000”.
  • Last seven digits (“0001313”): This is your unique employee number under that employer’s establishment.

Together, your Member ID ensures that your PF contributions are correctly credited to your account during your time with a particular employer. Understanding your Member ID and how it connects with your UAN is crucial for managing your retirement savings effectively.
Always ensure your Member IDs are properly linked, and transfer your old PF whenever you switch jobs to avoid future complications.
