Many employees accumulate multiple provident fund (PF) accounts when they switch companies. This may happen under one UAN. This fragmentation splits your savings and complicates administration.
Multiple PF accounts often lead to errors and more paperwork. Inactive PF accounts can even stop earning interest after 3 years.
Consolidate PF accounts to prevent complications during the final withdrawal or pension calculation. Check whether you have multiple PF accounts or not.
How to Check If You Have Multiple PF Accounts
There are three ways to check multiple PF accounts. Here’s what you need to know.
Method 1: Check Multiple PF Accounts Through Finright

Step 1: Visit the Check My PF portal.

Step 2: Verify Your Mobile Number.
Get an OTP on your mobile number. Enter the OTP to verify your number.

Finright will create your personal account for a better experience.
Step 3: Enter Your Personal Details.

Step 4: Go to the Dashboard to check Multiple PF Accounts.
Your Finright account will get linked to your UAN. Go to the dashboard to check your PF account.

- Existing member IDs linked to UAN
- Multiple PF accounts
- One or multiple UANs linked to your mobile number
- Inactive PF accounts

Finright helps you find multiple PF accounts. It also helps you detect and resolve PF issues as paid services.
Method 2: Check Through the EPFO Unified Member Portal
The EPFO Unified Member Portal displays all your PF accounts. All will be linked to your Universal Account Number (UAN).
Step 1: Visit the EPFO Portal.
Open the EPFO Unified Member Portal. Log in using your UAN and password.

Step 2: Verify Your Profile Details.
Click on View > Profile. Check your profile details.
- Aadhaar
- PAN
- Mobile number
- Bank account details
Make sure that all PF accounts associated with your UAN are visible.
Step 3: Go to the Service History Section.
Go to View > Service History.
This section displays all employers who have contributed to your EPF account under the same UAN.
Step 4: Review the Member IDs.
Check the list of member IDs shown under each employer. You may see multiple PF accounts if you have worked with multiple companies. Each member ID represents a separate PF account created by an employer.
Step 5: Identify Untransferred Accounts
Compare the list with your employment history. The PF accounts not been transferred will need to be merged.
What to Look For:
- More than one Member ID under the same UAN
- PF accounts from previous employers showing separate balances
- Old employment records that still appear active
Method 3: Check Through the One Member One EPF Account Facility
EPFO's One Member One EPF Account facility can help you identify old PF accounts.
Step 1: Log in to the EPFO Portal
Access the EPFO Member Portal using your UAN and password.
Step 2: Open the Transfer Request Section
From the main menu, select:
Online Services → One Member One EPF Account (Transfer Request)
This is the official portal used for Form 13 online transfer requests.
Step 3: Verify Your Personal Information
The system will automatically display your:
- Name
- UAN
- Mobile number
- Current employer details
Confirm that all information is correct.
Step 4: Check Available Previous PF Accounts
The portal may automatically display previous PF member IDs linked to your UAN. Review the details carefully.
Step 5: Match the Accounts With Your Employment History
Compare the displayed PF accounts with all the companies you have worked for. If an old PF account exists, it has not been consolidated.
Step 6: Note Any Missing Accounts
Sometimes older PF accounts do not appear because:
- Exit date has not been updated by the previous employer
- KYC details are incomplete
- The account is linked to a different UAN
Make a note of such accounts. They will need additional verification before you initiate the old PF account merge process.
Method 4: Check Through the UMANG App
The UMANG app provides a convenient way to find out multiple PF accounts under one UAN.
Step 1: Download and Open the UMANG App
Install the UMANG app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Create an account if you are a new user.
Step 2: Search for EPFO Services
After logging in, search for EPFO in the services section. Tap on the EPFO service option.
Step 3: Select 'View Passbook'
Under Employee-Centric Services, choose View Passbook.
Step 4: Enter Your UAN
Provide your UAN and complete OTP verification using your registered mobile number.
Step 5: Access Your EPF Passbook
Once verified, the app will display your EPF passbook details. You may see multiple passbook entries corresponding to different employers.
Step 6: Review Every PF Account
Check each passbook separately.
Look for:
- Different employer names
- Different Member IDs
- Separate PF balances
- Old accounts with no recent contributions
You have multiple PF accounts if you see multiple passbook entries. Make a note of:
- PF account numbers
- Employer names
- Dates of employment
You will need these details later when submitting your Form 13 online transfer request.
Multiple UANs are also an issue. EPFO mandates a single UAN per person. For this, you need to merge your UANs into one. All your PF IDs will be transferred to one UAN.
How to Merge/Consolidate PF Accounts - Form 13 Online
Open your EPFO account on the official website. Follow these steps to merge PF accounts into one by using the online Form 13 method.
Step 1: Activate and KYC-update your UAN.
Make sure your UAN is active with a full KYC update on the EPFO portal. You can use Finright to update KYC details at the earliest.
A fully KYC-seeded UAN automatically transfers past balances when you join a new company. If not, you will need to fill out and submit Form 13.
Step 2: Update Exit Date.
The EPFO system will not list your old PF account for transfer without an exit date.
Log in to the EPFO portal. Go to Manage > Mark Exit. Select the old Member ID and enter an exit date.
Remember, EPFO allows you to update an exit date after 2 months of leaving.
Step 3: Initiate Transfer (Form 13) Online.
- Go to Online Services > One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request).
- Enter your UAN and registered mobile number.
- Receive an OTP and submit it.
- Select your previous PF account details from the drop-down menu.
The portal will display your old PF accounts. You can add one or more accounts to consolidate PF.
Step 4: Verify Details and Submit.
Verify your personal and PF details carefully. Then:
- Click on Get OTP.
- Receive and submit OTP.
- Submit the transfer request.
Download the filled Form 13 PDF file for record-keeping. The online submission does not need any physical submission if you use eSign or Aadhar OTP. You will get a transfer request number for future reference.
Step 5: Employer Approval.
EPFO will notify your previous employer(s) to digitally verify the PF transfer claim.
You can also inform the previous and current employers to approve the online claim. EPFO completes the transfer once the employers’ digital signatures are received.
All of your selected PF funds and details will be transferred to your current PF account.
Step 6: Track PF Merge Status
Use the Track Claim Status link on the EPFO portal to check the transfer status. You can also use the UMANG app to do so.
Enter the transfer request number to check the PF consolidation status.
What Happens to Old Balances
All the previous member IDs become inactive when you successfully merge PF accounts. All the money from old PF accounts will be consolidated into the current PF account.
Old PF numbers will go dormant. You can view the entire balance under one passbook.
Merging vs Withdrawing Old PF - Which Is Better?
Confused about merging or withdrawing your old PF balance? Check out these differences.
Merge if you are continuing to work under a different EPF-covered employer. Withdraw if you are not planning to join a job for 2 months or more.
Withdrawal breaks your service for EPF/Pension schemes. Transfer keeps your service history continuous for pension calculation.
Transfer is not a taxable event. No TDS will be deducted.
TDS will be deducted if you withdraw before 5 years of total service. It is subject to 10% TDS above ₹50,000. Withdrawals are tax-free after 5 years.
Consolidate PF to earn PF interest under one account. Also, merging PF accounts will add the benefit of compound interest on the lump sum.
Merge PF by using Form 13 online. Withdrawal needs Form 19 submission. Both need approvals.
Merge PF accounts to keep your corpus intact. Withdraw PF when you are in dire need.
Merging is always better than withdrawal to save your retirement corpus. Withdraw your retirement savings only when you need them. Here’s a quick comparison table for your guidance.
| Aspect | Merge (Transfer) | Withdrawal (Settlement) |
|---|
| When to Use | Starting a new PF job / staying invested | Not returning to any job within 2 months (or retired) |
| Tax on Amount | No tax or TDS (balance simply moves) | Taxable if <5 years service (10% TDS if >₹50k and <5 yrs); tax-free if ≥5 years |
| Interest Accumulation | Continues to accrue (no break); full amount keeps earning until age 58 | Stops after account goes inactive (no contributions for 3 years) |
| Service Continuity | Maintained for pension/future benefits | Breaks. May affect pension eligibility or longevity benefits |
| Administrative Overhead | One consolidated account, simpler claims later | Separate claims needed for each withdrawn account |
| Example | Merge old PF when joining Company B | Withdraw PF if you quit job and retire |
What If the Old PF Account Is Inactive / Inoperative?
A PF account becomes inactive when no contribution is made for 3 years. No interest is earned in an inactive PF account.
Effects of Inactive Status
- Old PF balance stays safe
- No interest earned (after 3 years)
Consolidate old PF accounts to keep gaining interest. For this, you must have an active PF account.
Revival/Unblocking PF Steps
These steps help you revive inactive PF accounts.
- Link to UAN
- Complete KYC
- Post an unblocking PF request on the EPFO portal.
- The request will be routed to the respective employer(s).
- Once unblocked, the PF accounts will become active
- File a merging PF account request online (Form 13).
Only KYC-seeded and UAN linking will revive inactive PF accounts.
Common Issues in PF Consolidation
- Missing Exit Date: All PF accounts must have an exit date to file a PF transfer claim.
- KYC Incomplete: Check and complete KYC for all PF accounts.
- Multiple UANs: More than one UAN is against EPFO rules. Merge them first.
- One Request Per Account: EPFO accepts only one transfer request per old PF account. You have to resolve the first request issue before filing another one.
- Employer Delays: Employers must respond to digital signature requests for smooth PF consolidation.
- Technical or Portal Errors: Sometimes, the EPFO and UMANG portals experience downtime. Keep a screenshot of the errors displayed.
- Inoperative Account Rules: Inactive PF accounts (3 years or more) do not generate interest. Interests also end once you reach age 58.
- Fund Not Reflected: The transfer may not reflect in your passbook after consolidation. Check Track Claim Status. Update the passbook after a few days.
