Introduction: What Does "Checking Your PF" Actually Mean?
Checking your PF means more than just looking up a number. A complete "check my PF" review covers three things:
- Your current EPF balance and contribution history
- Whether you meet the eligibility rules for withdrawal right now
- Account health issues that may block your claim
All three matter. A healthy balance means nothing if your KYC is incomplete or your exit date is missing. Skipping the eligibility and health check is one of the most common reasons PF claims fail on the first attempt.
This guide walks you through all three steps, including how FinRight's CheckMyPF tool handles them for you automatically.
Check Your PF Balance: 4 Methods
You can easily find your PF balance through EPFO’s official channels. These four methods show you the PF account details in different ways.

Method 4: EPFO SMS service to Check PF Balance

Enter your UAN after EPFOHO. Add a language code you prefer and send this message. For example:

This service is available in ten languages. Choose a code according to your convenience.

These official methods are free and quick. Your EPFO passbook will give you the full details of your PF account balance. The missed call and SMS services only display the account balance.
See our detailed PF Balance Check guide for a step-by-step guide. This method will explain whether you are eligible for PF withdrawal or not.
Check whether you meet the eligibility requirements before making a PF claim.
Left Job and Completed Waiting Period
You must generally be unemployed for at least 1 continuous year for a full EPF withdrawal and for EPS you have to wait for 3 years if you have completed less than 10 years into your service or if you have completed more than 10 years it will be converted into a monthly pension . A full PF claim is not allowed if you are still employed.
Reached Retirement Age
Members who retire at the prescribed EPFO retirement age can withdraw their eligible PF balance.
Advance Partial PF Withdrawal Application
EPFO allows partial withdrawal for specific reasons:
- Essential Needs: Medical treatment (self or family), marriage (self, sibling, or child), post-secondary education (self or child)
- Housing Needs: House purchase or plot, home construction, home loan repayment, home renovation
Special Circumstances: Natural disasters, pandemics, and other events notified by EPFOMake sure you mention the reasons when you want to make an advanced PF withdrawal.
Meet Minimum Service Requirement for Withdrawal Reason
Certain advances/full require a minimum number of years of EPF membership.
Verified KYC Details
Your UAN profile should be linked to Aadhar, PAN, and bank account. Pending KYC verification is a common reason for claim delays and rejection.
Exit Date Updation
Make sure your employer has mentioned the exit date in the PF account after leaving the organisation. If not, you will not be able to make a withdrawal.
Unresolved EPS (Pension) Complications
The EPS portion will follow a different rule if you have covered 10 years or more of pensionable service.
PF Accounts are Consolidated
Multiple PF accounts or duplicate UANs can delay PF claims. You must merge PF accounts and make one UAN for an issueless PF claim.
Manually verifying these points might not be possible. The best way is to seek FinRight’s PF audit report.
Simply check your PF account health to get a detailed audit right away. This report will find out the blockages of your PF account, like:
- Available and blocked PF amount
- Amount consolidation in one UAN
- KYC details
- PF contributions
- EPS
- Transfer between companies
Enter your UAN and get an OTP in your registered mobile number. Get a PF report in minutes and uncover the hidden issues.

What Blocks Your PF Withdrawal
Most PF eligibility issues find these problems linked to the non-withdrawability of the PF amount.
Incomplete KYC
Your UAN must be linked with your Aadhar, PAN and bank accounts. Mismatch in the name or missing KYC will block online services.
Update your KYC on the EPFO portal under Manage > KYC.
You can also use the UMANG app to link these documents.
Exit Date Not Updated
There has to be an Exit Date in your PF account after you have left an organisation. It must be there in your service history on the EPFO portal. A missing or incorrect exit date can reject your PF claim.
Multiple UANs and Unresolved Transfers
Merge or transfer all into one UAN if you have more than one. It can be done in the Unified Portal online. Also, consolidate all into one PF account for easy withdrawal.EPS Complications
If your service history shows 10 or more years of pensionable service, the EPS portion of your PF is reserved as a pension. You cannot withdraw the EPS share in cash after 10 years; you must claim the monthly pension instead. EPS record mismatches or errors can delay the non-EPS portion of your withdrawal as well. See FinRight's EPS Rules Guide for details.
Other Issues
Sometimes, employers have not deposited PF contributions. It leads to gaps in your passbook. The EPFO portal won’t show your balance if your employer is exempted. For this, you need to contact the HR or check the salary slips.
Name or date of birth mismatches between PF records and Aadhar/banks can also block PF withdrawals. However, it can be fixed via a joint declaration form.
Identify these issues by logging into the EPFO portal. Check your profile and service history. Seek professional assistance from FinRight if you are unable to track the PF issues. FinRight offers services to fill Form 13 (PF transfer), Form 10C (EPS withdrawal), Form 9 (details correction), etc.
How Much Can I Withdraw from my PF Balance?
Your maximum PF withdrawal depends on whether it is a full or partial advance. It also depends on the EPFO 3.0 rules. In general:
Full PF Withdrawal
| Situation | Amount Available |
|---|
| Immediately after job loss | 75% of total EPF balance (employee + employer share) |
| After 12 months of continuous unemployment | Remaining 25% of EPF balance |
| On retirement at prescribed EPFO age | 100% of EPF balance |
Auto-settlement: Claims of Rs.5 lakh or below are processed automatically by EPFO when your KYC is complete and verified. No employer approval is needed.
Partial Withdrawal (Advances)
You can withdraw a portion via Form 31 for specific needs while still employed.A minimum of 12 months of EPF membership is generally required.
- Medical treatment (100% of employee share or up to 6 months’ salary)
- Children’s education
- Marriage (self or family)
- Home purchase
- Home renovation
- Pre-retirement
Here’s a summary to follow
| Category | Approved Purposes | Indicative Limit |
|---|
| Essential Needs | Medical treatment (self or family) | Upto 100% of eligible PF balance |
| Essential Needs | Marriage or post-secondary education | Upto 100% of eligible PF balance |
| Housing Needs | House purchase, plot, or construction | Upto 100% of eligible PF balance |
| Housing Needs | Home renovation | Upto 100% of eligible PF balance |
| Housing Needs | Home loan repayment | Upto 100% of eligible PF balance |
| Special Circumstances | Natural disaster, pandemic, or other EPFO-notified event | Upto 100% of eligible PF balance |
Specific limits may vary based on your service history and individual account details. Use the CheckMyPF tool to check the exact amount you are eligible to withdraw.
Tax note: EPF withdrawals made before 5 years of continuous service are taxable. TDS applies at 34.608% if you do not have a PAN linked. From Tax Year 2026-27, Form 121 (replacing the earlier Form 15G and 15H) is used to declare that your income is below the taxable threshold and avoid TDS. See our Form 121 guide for details.
For the full breakdown of current withdrawal rules, see our PF Withdrawal Rules 2026 guide.
