Changing jobs is often exciting, as a new role often brings better opportunities, higher pay, and fresh challenges. But amid all the paperwork, one important task often gets overlooked—transferring your Provident Fund (PF) account.
Most of us withdraw our PF balance after switching jobs, and it isn’t the best financial decision. A PF transfer helps you keep your retirement savings intact, maintain service continuity, and avoid unnecessary tax implications.
Every time you switch employers, a new PF member ID is usually created under the same UAN. But your accumulated PF balance from the previous employer does not automatically move to the new account. You have to transfer it to your new PF account. You may also choose to withdraw it, but then there are disadvantages.
Your Employees' Provident Fund is designed to support your long-term financial security. When you keep the funds invested, your retirement corpus continues to grow without interruption.
One of the biggest advantages of transferring PF is the benefit of compounding. The longer your money stays invested, the more interest it earns. Over time, interest gets added to the principal, and future interest is calculated on the increased amount. This creates significant growth over the years.
Also, if you withdraw PF before completing 5 years of continuous service, the amount may become taxable, and TDS may apply. A transfer, however, is treated as a continuation of service and remains tax-free.
In short, if you have joined a new company, transferring your PF is usually a smarter move than withdrawing it.
Prerequisites for PF Transfer
Before you begin the transfer process, ensure your EPF account details are up to date. A few checks beforehand will save you considerable time later and prevent your application from being rejected.
The good news is that most of these requirements can be verified online through the EPFO member portal. Once everything is in place, the transfer process becomes much smoother.
● UAN Activation
Your Universal Account Number (UAN) must be active.
Log in to the EPFO Member Portal using your UAN and password. If you have not activated your UAN yet, complete the activation process first through the UMANG App.
Since all PF accounts linked to your employment history are connected through the UAN, this is the foundation for any transfer request.
● KYC Approval
Your KYC details should be approved and verified.
Ensure the following details are linked correctly:
- PAN
- Aadhaar with Aadhaar-linked mobile number
- Bank account details
Any mismatch in name, date of birth, or account details can create problems during the transfer process.
● Exit Date Updated
Your previous employer must update your Date of Exit (DOE) on the EPFO portal. This is one of the most common reasons why transfer requests get delayed.
Before initiating an online transfer, verify that your exit date appears correctly in the service history section of your EPFO account. Missing exit dates often lead to transfer failures and claim rejections.
How to Transfer PF Online — Step by Step (EPFO Portal)
The easiest way to complete an EPF transfer online is through the EPFO member portal. The entire process is largely digital and can usually be completed within a few minutes if your records are accurate.
If you are wondering how to transfer PF without visiting multiple offices, the online route is the most convenient option available today.
● Step 1: Log In to the Member Portal
Go to the EPFO Unified Member Portal and log in with your UAN. From the Dashboard, click on the Online Services.
From the options, click on "Request for transfer of account".

● Step 2: Fill in Member and Account Details
Part A: Verify and fill in your personal/member details.
Part B (Previous PF Account): Enter your previous PF Account number and click "Click here to get Details". The system will populate the establishment name, address, EPFO office, and your name. Manually fill in your Date of Birth or any missing details.
Part C (Present PF Account): Enter your current PF Account number and click "Click here to get details". Verify the automatically populated establishment and fund details, and fill in any missing information.

● Step 3: Check if employer attestation is required
For Member IDs created after October 2016, employer attestation is generally not required for online PF transfers.
However, for Member IDs created before October 2016, employer attestation may still be required in certain cases, depending on the transfer request and the availability/completeness of records on the EPFO portal.
● Step 4: Preview and Verify
Click the "Preview" button to review the completed application.
If you need to make corrections, click "To change application data, click here".
● Step 5: PIN Authentication & Submission
Type the CAPTCHA shown in the text box.
Check the declaration box that says "I Agree".
Click "GET PIN" to receive a security PIN on your Aadhaar-linked registered mobile number.
Enter the received PIN and submit the online claim application. Click "OK" on the confirmation prompt.
● Step 6: Final Physical Submission (Optional)
The system will generate a printable Transfer Claim Form (Form-13) as a PDF.
Download and print this PDF file of Form 13.
Sign the physical copy and submit it to the employer you selected for attestation (previous or present) to complete the submission process.
These are the core PF transfer steps that most employees follow while submitting an EPF transfer online request through the EPFO system.
Offline PF Transfer — Form 13 Route
Although the online system works efficiently, there are situations where you may need to use the offline route. Technical issues, incomplete records, or verification failures can occasionally prevent successful online submission.
You may need to use offline transfer if:
● The EPFO portal has technical faults
● Employer digital signatures are not working
● UAN mapping problems exist
● Online verification repeatedly fails
● Legacy PF accounts are involved
When these happen, Form 13 remains the alternative mechanism for transferring PF balances. Form 13 is the official transfer application used to move your PF balance from the previous establishment to the current one. The form contains:
● Personal details
● Previous employer information
● Current employer information
● PF account details
Once the form is filled, submit it to your HR, and they will forward it to the relevant EPFO offices for processing. While effective, this method generally takes longer because of manual verification and document movement.

How Long Does PF Transfer Take?
Now, you may ask, how long does PF transfer take? The answer depends largely on the method you used and the accuracy of your records. Although with digitisation, transfer timelines have improved considerably over the last few years, delays can still occur if verification issues arise.
An online transfer request is typically processed within 7 to 20 working days. The timeline may vary depending on:
● Employer approval speed
● EPFO workload
● Accuracy of your submitted information
● Your KYC verification status
Through the offline route, it will generally take you more than 30 days. The process is often delayed due to -
● Manual scrutiny
● Physical document movement
● Employer verification
● EPFO office processing
If the transfer remains pending beyond the expected timeline, it is advisable to check the status or raise a grievance.
How to Track Transfer Status
Submitting the request is only half the process. Tracking the progress helps you understand whether additional action is needed. Fortunately, EPFO provides a simple mechanism to monitor transfer requests online.
● Simply log in to your EPFO member portal.
● Navigate to Online Services.
● Select Track Transfer Status.
● Enter the required details if prompted.
● The system will display the latest status of your transfer application.
Understand the status messages, which will be updated from time to time and includes -
● Received by Employer - Your request has been submitted and is awaiting employer verification.
● Pending at Field Office - The employer has approved the request, and the EPFO field office is processing it.
● Approved - Your transfer request has been successfully processed, and the balance will be reflected in the destination account.
Checking status periodically will help you identify delays early and avoid unnecessary waiting.
Common PF Transfer Problems
Even when everything appears correct, you may face obstacles during the transfer process. Most issues are routine and can be resolved without much difficulty. Understanding the cause of the problem often leads directly to the solution.
● Exit Date Not Updated by Previous Company
This is the most common reason for transfer failure. Without an official exit date, EPFO records indicate that the employment relationship is still active.
Use the Manage > Mark Exit option available on the member portal and update the information if eligible. You may also contact your previous employer to complete the update.
● KYC or Name Mismatch Errors
Differences between Aadhaar, PAN, employer records, or EPFO records can create verification issues. Common examples include minute spelling differences, initials mismatch, or incorrect date of birth.
You can submit a correction request through the EPFO portal or initiate a joint declaration process with the employer. Ensure that all records reflect the same information.
● Employer Not Responding
Sometimes the transfer request remains stuck because the employer has not approved or acted on the application.
You may raise a complaint through the EPFiGMS (EPF Grievance Management System) or contact your office HR to speed up the process.
PF Transfer vs PF Withdrawal - Which Is Better?
PF Transfer. There is no debate or choice between transferring the balance and withdrawing it. PF withdrawal may appear convenient in the short term, but a PF Transfer usually offers stronger long-term benefits.
PF withdrawals before completing 5 years of continuous service may attract TDS, income tax liability, or any other compliance requirements. On the other hand, an EPF transfer to a new employer account remains completely tax-free.
Also, understand that the retirement wealth grows over time through compounding. When you withdraw funds, the compounding cycle is interrupted. The money stops earning EPF interest, and future contributions start from a lower base.
By choosing PF transfer, your accumulated balance continues growing uninterrupted. Over ten, twenty, or thirty years, the continuity creates a substantial difference in retirement savings.
Choose Online PF Transfer Through the EPFO Portal
Switching jobs does not mean starting your PF journey from scratch.
The online transfer process is simple, largely paperless, and designed to help you maintain continuity in your retirement savings. With an active UAN, approved KYC, and an updated exit date, most transfers can be completed smoothly through the EPFO portal.
If you have recently joined a new company, do not leave your old PF account behind. Initiate the transfer early and keep your retirement corpus growing without interruption.
