Yes, EPF can be withdrawn, but only when your situation fits a rule EPFO recognises. You can take out the full balance if you retire at 55 or later, leave India for good, or stay out of EPF-covered work for 12 months. If you are still working, you can only make a partial withdrawal, and only after 12 months of membership. Even then, 25% of your contributions stay in the account.
If you read somewhere that two months without a job is enough for a full PF withdrawal, that advice is out of date. EPFO's Central Board of Trustees approved new withdrawal rules in October 2025. The EPF Scheme, 2026, which replaced the 1952 scheme on 29 June 2026, carried those rules into law.
Below, you will find who is eligible, when you can withdraw, when you cannot, why claims get rejected even when you qualify, and how to check your own account before you file.
Quick summary
Eligibility at a glance
- Any online claim needs an Aadhaar-seeded UAN, approved KYC (Aadhaar, PAN and bank account) and a name and date of birth that match your Aadhaar.
- Partial withdrawal needs at least 12 months of EPF membership. You can still be employed.
- Full withdrawal needs you to be out of EPF-covered work, with your date of exit marked.
- EPS pension withdrawal needs less than 10 years of EPS service and 36 months out of work.
When you can and can't withdraw
- Full withdrawal is allowed on retirement at 55 or later, permanent disability, incapacity to work, retrenchment, voluntary retirement, or leaving India permanently.
- After a job loss, you can take 75% of your PF balance right away. The last 25% opens up only after 12 months without EPF-covered work.
- While employed, only partial withdrawal is possible, under three heads: Essential Needs (illness with no limit, education up to 10 times, marriage up to 5 times), Housing Needs (up to 5 times) and Special Circumstances (up to 2 times a financial year).
- 25% of your contributions must stay in the account as a minimum balance during partial withdrawals.
- Most rejections come from records, not rules: unapproved KYC, a missing date of exit, a name or date of birth mismatch, or an unverified bank account.
- UPI and ATM withdrawals under EPFO 3.0 have been announced and tested, but EPFO has not confirmed a nationwide launch yet.
- Check before you file. A CheckMyPF report shows what is blocking your claim.
EPF Withdrawal Eligibility: Who Can Withdraw?
Eligibility is about you and your account. Conditions, covered in the next section, are about your situation. You need both before EPFO will pay a claim.
Basic eligibility for any EPF withdrawal
Every claim, full or partial, needs these in place on the EPFO Member Portal:
- An activated UAN seeded with your Aadhaar
- KYC approved for Aadhaar and bank account, showing as verified under Manage > KYC
- Your name and date of birth in EPFO matching your Aadhaar exactly
- A bank account in your own name, verified in EPFO
- Old PF accounts transferred into your current UAN, so your full service shows
PAN deserves a special mention. Without it, TDS on a withdrawal made before 5 years of continuous service is cut at a much higher rate.
Eligibility for full withdrawal (Form 19)
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|
| Not working in an EPF-covered establishment | No employer is currently paying PF for you |
| Date of exit marked | Your last employer's record shows you have left |
| A qualifying situation | Retirement at 55 or later, disability, retrenchment, voluntary retirement, leaving India permanently, or 12 months without EPF-covered work |
Eligibility for partial withdrawal (Form 31)
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|
| 12 months of EPF membership | Service at past employers counts only once those accounts are transferred to your UAN |
| Within the frequency limit | Each category has a cap on how many times you can withdraw (see the table below) |
| 25% minimum balance kept | You can take up to 75% of the PF balance |
| Employment status | You can apply while still working |
Eligibility for EPS pension withdrawal (Form 10C)
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|
| Less than 10 years of EPS service | At 10 years or more, you get a monthly pension from 58 instead of a lump sum |
| 36 months out of EPF-covered work | This wait was 2 months until the new rules |
| Date of exit marked | Same as for full PF withdrawal |
When CAN You Withdraw EPF?
EPF withdrawal comes in two forms. A full withdrawal, also called final settlement, closes out your PF account through Form 19. A partial withdrawal, also called an advance, lets you take part of the money through Form 31 while the account stays open.
Full withdrawal: when you can take everything
As per the Ministry of Labour's October 2025 clarification, these are the situations where your entire PF balance, including the 25% minimum balance, can be paid out.
| Your situation | How much you can withdraw | Waiting period |
|---|
| Retirement at age 55 or later | 100% | None |
| Permanent disability or incapacity to work | 100% | None |
| Retrenchment by employer | 100% | None |
| Voluntary retirement | 100% | None |
| Leaving India permanently | 100% | None |
| Resigned or lost your job, not working anywhere EPF-covered | 75% now, 25% later | 12 months for the last 25% |
The last row is where most people get caught. Until June 2026, two months of unemployment was enough for a full settlement. Now the remaining 25% opens up only after 12 months without a job in an EPF-covered establishment.
Here is how that plays out. Say Neha has ₹4,00,000 in PF and resigns in July 2026 to take a break. She can claim ₹3,00,000 straight away. If she is still not working in an EPF-covered job by July 2027, she can claim the remaining ₹1,00,000 along with interest. If she joins a new company in March 2027, that ₹1,00,000 should be transferred to her new PF account instead.
A note on your pension money. Your EPS (pension) balance follows separate rules. If you have less than 10 years of EPS service, you can take a withdrawal benefit through Form 10C, but only after 36 months out of work. That wait used to be 2 months. Once you cross 10 years of EPS service, there is no lump sum; you get a monthly pension from age 58.
Partial withdrawal: when you can take some of it
You do not have to quit your job to use your PF. Under the new rules, any member with 12 months of service can apply for a partial withdrawal. The CBT's 13 October 2025 decision merged 13 old withdrawal reasons into three heads.
| Category | What it covers | How often you can withdraw |
|---|
| Essential Needs | Illness, education, marriage | Illness: no limit. Education: up to 10 times. Marriage: up to 5 times. Counted over your whole membership |
| Housing Needs | Buying a house, flat or site, building a house, home loan repayment, renovation | Up to 5 times over your whole membership |
| Special Circumstances | Any need; you no longer have to state a reason | Up to 2 times in a financial year |
Illness is the only purpose with no cap at all. Earlier, marriage and education together were allowed only 3 times in total. Three things changed in your favour. The service needed is now 12 months for every category, down from as much as seven years. The amount you can take now includes your employer's share, not only your own contribution. And for most partial claims, no supporting documents are needed.
The catch is the minimum balance. 25% of your contributions must stay in the account at all times while you are employed. So the most you can take as an advance is 75% of the PF balance. For a deeper look at limits by purpose, read our guide to PF withdrawal rules in 2026. If your need is a house, our blog on PF withdrawal for a home loan covers that case step by step.
When CAN'T You Withdraw EPF?
Some blocks come from the rules. Others come from gaps in your records. Both stop a claim the same way.
1. While you are still employed (full withdrawal blocked)
As long as you work in an EPF-covered establishment, Form 19 is off the table. The system sees an active member, so it will only let you file Form 31 for a partial withdrawal. This also applies if you have joined a new employer and your old PF account shows no exit. In that case, the right move is a transfer, not a withdrawal.
2. Less than 12 months of service
Every partial withdrawal now needs at least 12 months of membership. If you joined your first EPF-covered job eight months ago, the portal will not accept an advance claim yet. Service at earlier employers counts only if those old PF accounts have been transferred into your current UAN. If they have not, your service may look shorter than it is.
3. KYC not approved
Your Aadhaar, PAN and bank account must all show as verified under Manage > KYC on the EPFO Member Portal. A KYC that sits at "pending with employer" is not approved. Online claims need an Aadhaar-seeded UAN, and the name and date of birth in EPFO must match your Aadhaar. A one-letter spelling difference is enough to cause a rejection.
4. Date of exit not updated
This is the most common blocker we see at FinRight. If your last employer has not marked your date of exit, EPFO treats you as still employed, so it blocks final settlement and pension withdrawal.
You can fix this yourself in many cases. Two months after your employer's last PF contribution, log in to the member portal and use Manage > Mark Exit. Pick the exit date carefully. It should fall in the month of your last contribution, and you cannot freely change it again later from the same page.
Before filing anything, run through our checklist of PF withdrawal prerequisites. It covers UAN, KYC, forms and the small errors that cost people weeks.

What Happens If You Try to Withdraw and Get Rejected?
A rejected claim does not cost you money, and you can file again. What it costs is time. Claims up to ₹5 lakh now go through EPFO's auto-settlement, where software checks your eligibility, KYC and bank details before any officer looks at them. If something does not match, the claim can bounce back with a one-line remark and no further explanation.
You will find the remark under Online Services > Track Claim Status on the member portal. Here is what the common ones usually mean.
| Rejection reason | What it usually means | How to fix it |
|---|
| Date of exit not available | Old employer never marked your exit | Mark exit yourself after 2 months, or ask the employer to update it |
| Name or DOB mismatch | EPFO record differs from Aadhaar | File a joint declaration correction through your employer |
| Bank account not verified | Account not seeded, closed, or name differs | Update bank KYC and get it approved |
| Not eligible as per service | Under 12 months of membership, or old accounts not transferred | Transfer old PF accounts into your current UAN first |
| Claim under wrong category | Form 19 filed while still employed, or before 12 months out of work | Use Form 31 for an advance, or wait for the 12-month mark |
| EPS service mismatch | Pension service differs from PF service | Get service history corrected before filing Form 10C |
Once you have fixed the cause, file a fresh claim. If the same claim keeps getting rejected, there is usually a deeper record problem, such as overlapping service dates or an unmerged old account. Our guide to common reasons for EPF claim rejection walks through nine of them with fixes. Not transferring old accounts is a big one; this real case shows how it cut one member's withdrawable amount sharply.
If EPFO does not act on a correct claim, you can raise a complaint on the official EPFiGMS grievance portal.

Check If Your EPF Is Withdrawable Before You File
Most people find out about a problem only after the claim is rejected. By then, they have lost a week or more. A two-minute check beforehand saves that time.
FinRight's CheckMyPF reads your PF records and flags what would stop a claim today:
- KYC that is not approved or not validated
- A missing or wrong date of exit
- Aadhaar details that do not match your PF record
- A bank account that does not meet EPFO's checks
- A waiting period or service condition you have not met yet
- A mismatch in your EPS pension service

Conclusion
So, can EPF be withdrawn? Yes, but the rules in 2026 are stricter on full withdrawal and easier on partial withdrawal. You get the full amount at retirement, on leaving India or after 12 months without EPF-covered work. While working, you can take up to 75% of the PF balance.
What stops most people is not the rule itself. It is a missing exit date, a KYC that never got approved, or a name that does not match Aadhaar. Fix those first, and your claim has a far better chance of going through on the first try.
