For all salaried employees, the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is a familiar retirement savings tool. However, few understand the pension component linked to it. This pension benefit comes under the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), which is managed by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).
As retirement planning becomes increasingly important, you must know how to check EPFO pension status online and stay informed about your future pension benefits, claim progress, and contribution records.
The Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) was introduced in 1995 to provide a monthly pension to all eligible employees after retirement. Every EPF member whose basic salary falls within the prescribed EPFO limits contributes indirectly towards EPS through your employer's share.
You generally becomes eligible for pension benefits after completing at least 10 years of pensionable service and attaining the prescribed retirement age. EPS also provides benefits in cases of permanent disability and support to family members after the pensioner's death.
In 2026, EPFO's digital services make it easier than ever for you to monitor pension-related records. Whether you are nearing retirement, have applied for pension benefits, or simply want to verify your contribution history, online tracking can save time and reduce uncertainty. Regular EPF pension status check helps you -
- Verify pension contributions made by employers
- Track pension claim applications
- Identify missing service records
- Ensure accurate pension calculations
- Detect account discrepancies early
Most of us assume that our entire EPF contribution goes into one account. In reality, EPF and EPS work differently.
The EPF account accumulates contributions from both employee and employer, along with interest earned annually. The EPS account, on the other hand, is a pension fund. It does not earn interest like EPF. Instead, contributions are recorded to determine future pension eligibility and pension amount.
When you view your EPFO passbook, EPF and EPS contributions appear under separate columns. Understanding this distinction is important while going through an EPF pension status check or reviewing retirement benefits.
"Pension status" can mean three different things, depending on where you are in your career:
| Your situation | What "pension status" means | Where to check |
|---|
| Still working | Are EPS contributions being credited every month? | EPFO Passbook (Pension Contribution column) |
| Left a job or retiring, claim filed | Where is my Form 10C or Form 10D claim? | Member Portal, Passbook Portal, UMANG |
| Already a pensioner | Is my monthly pension being paid? | EPFO Pensioners' Portal (PPO number) |
EPF vs EPS: Why Your Pension Has No "Balance"
| EPF | EPS |
|---|
| Who contributes | Employee 12% + part of employer share | Only the employer (8.33%, capped) |
| Earns interest | Yes, credited every year | No |
| What you get | Lump sum corpus | Monthly pension (10+ years) or withdrawal benefit (under 10 years) |
| How it is shown | Running balance with interest | Monthly contribution entries |
Because EPS is a pooled pension fund, your pension is calculated on your pensionable salary and pensionable service, not on the total amount deposited. That is why the passbook shows EPS entries, not an EPS "balance" that grows with interest. To estimate your future pension, see our EPS rules guide.
How to Check Your EPS Pension Balance / Status
Checking your EPS details has become straightforward thanks to EPFO's online services. You can now access pension-related information through the EPFO portal, UMANG mobile app, and SMS services.
Method 1: EPFO Passbook Portal (Most Detailed)
The Passbook Portal shows every monthly EPS credit, member ID by member ID.
- Go to the EPFO Member Passbook portal.
- Enter your UAN, password and captcha, then log in.
- Select the Member ID for the employer you want to check.
- Your passbook opens with columns for Employee Share, Employer Share and Pension Contribution.
- Scan the Pension Contribution column month by month for gaps or zero entries.
- Repeat for every Member ID linked to your UAN.
Tip: Members can also view a summarised Passbook Lite inside the EPFO Member Portal without a separate login. Use the full passbook when you need month-wise EPS entries. More on this in EPFO Passbook Lite and Annexure K.
Note: If your employer runs an exempted PF trust, the EPFO passbook will not show your PF balance. EPS is still managed by EPFO for most trust members; check with your employer's PF trust for the PF side.
Method 2: UMANG App
- Download the UMANG app from Google Play or the App Store.
- Register with your mobile number and verify the OTP.
- Search for EPFO and open Employee Centric Services.
- Tap View Passbook, enter your UAN and verify the OTP.
- Select the Member ID and review EPF and pension entries separately.
UMANG is handy if you have worked with several employers and want to check each Member ID on your phone.
Method 3: SMS (Basic Check Only)
From the mobile number registered with your UAN, send EPFOHO UAN ENG to EPFO's SMS number listed on epfindia.gov.in. Replace ENG with your language code if needed.
You will receive your latest contribution, total PF balance and KYC status. The SMS does not show EPS contributions or pension status. Use it only to confirm that contributions are active, then check the passbook for EPS details. For all balance check methods, see our PF balance check guide.
How to Check EPS Pension Claim Status (Form 10C / Form 10D)
Once you file Form 10C (withdrawal benefit or Scheme Certificate) or Form 10D (monthly pension), track it online:
On the Member Portal
- Log in to the EPFO Member Portal with your UAN.
- Go to Online Services > Track Claim Status.
- Find your pension claim and check its current stage.
On the Passbook Portal Log in and open the Claim Status tab to see all claims filed against each Member ID.
On UMANG Open EPFO services, tap Track Claim, and verify with your UAN and OTP.
If you are tracking a PF withdrawal or transfer rather than a pension claim, see our guide on why EPF claim status shows pending.
How to Check Pension Status if You Are Already a Pensioner
After your pension is sanctioned, EPFO issues a Pension Payment Order (PPO) with a 12-digit PPO number.
- Go to epfindia.gov.in and open the Pensioners' Portal.
- Click Know Your Pension Status.
- Select the issuing office, enter the Office ID and your PPO number.
- Click Get Status to see your pension and payment details.
Do not have your PPO number? Use Know Your PPO No. on the same portal with your bank account number or PF Member ID.
Also make sure your annual life certificate (Jeevan Pramaan) is up to date. If it lapses, monthly pension payments can be paused until a fresh certificate is submitted.
What Do the EPS Claim Status Messages Mean?
When tracking a claim, you may often encounter status messages that can be confusing at first glance. We will help you decode the messages, so you understand what action (if any) is required from your side.
This status indicates that the EPFO office has received your application. Officials are reviewing service records, contribution history, bank account details and eligibility requirements.
At this stage, no further action is usually required from your side unless EPFO requests additional documents.
A "Settled" status means your application has been approved. Depending on your type of claim pension payments may be initiated, withdrawal benefits may be credited, and scheme certificates may be generated.
You must verify your bank accounts after receiving this status. If you are trying to check pension amount EPFO records after approval, this status generally indicates that the process has been completed successfully.
- Pensioner / Scheme Certificate Issued -
This status confirms that EPFO has completed your pension registration or issued the Scheme Certificate. For retirees, it means they are officially recorded as pension beneficiaries.
For employees leaving service before retirement, it confirms that the Scheme Certificate is available for preserving pension benefits.
A rejected claim usually occurs because of name mismatch, date of birth mismatch, incorrect bank details, incomplete service records and any KYC discrepancies.
In such situations, you may need to correct records and submit a fresh application.
| Status | What it means | What you should do |
|---|
| Under Process / Pending | EPFO has received your claim and is verifying service, contributions, KYC and bank details. | Nothing, unless EPFO asks for documents. If it stays here beyond 20 days, check for errors. |
| Settled / Approved | Your claim is approved. A withdrawal benefit is paid to your bank, a Scheme Certificate is issued, or your pension is sanctioned. | Check your bank account. For pension, note your PPO number. For a Scheme Certificate, download and keep it safe. |
| Rejected / Returned | EPFO could not process the claim. The reason is shown on the portal. | Read the reason, fix it, then file a fresh claim. |
Common rejection reasons for pension claims: name or date of birth mismatch with Aadhaar, incorrect or unverified bank details, missing date of exit, service gaps, or EPS membership errors. See PF claim rejected: 7 reasons and fixes.
Before you file or refile a pension claim: Run a free check on CheckMyPF. It flags KYC mismatches, missing exit dates and service history errors that commonly lead to rejected pension claims
Why Is My EPS Balance Not Showing?
In most cases, nothing is wrong. Here is how the contribution split works.
You contribute 12% of basic pay plus DA to EPF. Your employer also contributes 12%, split as:
- 8.33% to EPS, calculated on wages up to the wage ceiling
- The rest to your EPF account
The Wage Ceiling Changed in September 2026
| Period | EPS wage ceiling | Maximum employer EPS contribution |
|---|
| Up to 16 September 2026 | ₹15,000 per month | ₹1,250 per month |
| From 17 September 2026 | ₹25,000 per month | ₹2,083 per month |
So if you earn ₹50,000 a month, your EPS entry will be capped at ₹2,083 for months from 17 September 2026, and ₹1,250 for earlier months. The rest of the employer share goes to EPF. A capped figure is normal, not an error. (Higher-pension cases under the 2022 Supreme Court judgment are handled separately.)
When a Missing EPS Entry Is a Real Problem
Look closer if you see:
- Zero EPS from your first month, even though your wages were within the ceiling
- EPS stopped mid-career before you turned 58
- EPS entries after age 58, which should not happen
- Wrong date of birth or joining date, which changes pensionable service
- Old Member IDs not transferred, which breaks your service history
EPFO has issued guidance on correcting EPS errors; see our breakdown of the 19 December 2025 EPS correction circular. Missing service from a past employer often traces back to an incomplete transfer; read how to transfer all your PF into one account. Pension entries missing or wrong? These errors are much easier to fix before you file a claim than after it is rejected. Talk to a FinRight PF expert to review your EPS history.
